Story Behind
the Smile
It was always my dream to see whales in the wild after
having a serious accident back in 1993 which left me with
13 fractures to my back, legs and arm, and was unable to
walk properly for 3 years. I was working as an overseas
tour guide at the time and it was my first day on the road
when I was hit my a truck. Ouch it was more painful than
when I was run over by a police car at the little age of
3!
The doctors told me that I wouldn't make it and at times,
I felt they were right! However, onwards and upwards being
my mantra, I wouldn't give in, and went back to work Afterwards
earning a new name of 'Robo Rep!' and yes, I did make funny
noises at airports for a while!
I
moved to Spain for a few years to get rid of this cold weather
and picked up a lovely puppy spaniel called 'Max' who became
my best friend and helped me to take more and more steps
to improve my walking. After being given the 'Cheesy Grin
Award for Keeping My Pearlies on Show Against the Odds"
we then moved back to England in a battered Renault Clio
with an adopted cat and a Golden Retriever in 1999!
I picked up my first Sony Cybershot back in 2001 from Cameras
Underwater and although I was scared of diving, it didn't
stop my fear of getting in the water, even though I was
too scared to be underneath it on anything other than a
snorkel! My first ever underwater photos were taken of Manatees
in Florida's Crystal Springs and then visited my beloved
'Sea of Cortez' in Mexico shortly afterwards, fell in love
with the playful sealions there as well as the wonderful
whales and dolphins that visit this and the surrounding
area of Baja California. I had always dreamed of being able
to buy an SLR camera, but had been bound by the expense
as well as the weight. So, I just kept snapping with my
compact and hoped that I might get some nice shots.
It took me three years to get over my fear of underwater
and thanks to extremely patient Instructors, Angie from
Utila Lodge in Honduras and Abri from Coral Beach, Sodwana
Bay, South Africa they both coaxed me out of my fear of
being beneath the surface, and thanks to them, started an
incurable and extremely expensive addiction to our underwater
world in 2003! And the rest as they say is history!
The
guests that I have met along this journey, wherever I have
been has been truly amazing, with so much joy and happiness
shared for our underwater world, it has really kept me smiling
- although the website may look like there are other people
involved, everything is done (apart from my website designer,
Tracey, you have done an amazing job) and maintained by
myself with large amounts of coffee by my side - and I truly
hope that you enjoy looking through this website. Without
your encouragement , none of this would have been possible.
Thank you for giving me such great times with these compact
cameras. They truly can give HUGE results!
I don't promise to know infinite amounts of camera knowledge,
but I do know the secrets behind each and every one of the
photographs shown on my website which I am more than happy
to share with you. My secret of great photos is to keep
everything as simple as possible and that includes all the
jargon! I Look forward to meeting you one day and in the
meantime wish you lots of great photo opportunities.
